PROVISIONAL GUIDELINES FOR CONTINUING EDUCATION HOURS

JUNE, 2003

GENERAL INFORMATION

All licensed psychologists must complete 20 Continuing Education hours every 2 years to renew their West Virginia licenses. Ten of these hours must be from APA or NASP-approved providers of continuing education credits and three hours must be in ethics.

Licensed School Psychologists are required to obtain 30 hours of Continuing Education Units every 3 years. Fifteen of these hours must be from APA or NASP approved providers of continuing education credits and three of these hours must be concerning ethics. Any sessions offered by WVSPA, WVPA, APA, or NASP are approved. If a licensed School Psychologist is also a Nationally Certified School Psychologist (NCSP) through NASP, his or her license is automatically renewed upon presentation of appropriate documentation (i.e., NASP issued card with NCSP number).

Licensed school psychologists’/licensed psychologists’ continuing education hours may be audited upon license renewal.

There is a variety of options to obtain continuing education hours, which are identified below. Each psychologist is responsible for obtaining proof (certificates/forms) from the provider so that if/when there is an audit at license renewal time, there will be appropriate documentation. Three (3) hours of ethics continuing education hours must be included with each renewal.

A. BASIC PROGRAM SOURCES:

APA approved, CPA, WVPA, WVSPA, NASP, State or Regional Boards or Associations of Psychology and would include on-line correspondence, lectures, and workshops. These categories never need pre-approval.

Psychological topics presented by psychologists.

Programs of a clearly psychological nature, presented by recognized mental health professionals with demonstrated competencies in their fields.

B. POST GRADUATE COURSES:

Licensed psychologists/licensed school psychologists who successfully complete grades A, B, or passing for a graduate psychology course from a regionally accredited graduate institution, may apply such credits towards their continuing education requirements. Each graduate credit hour completed can be counted as one hour of CE. The full mandated CE credits (equal to 10 CE hours/year) may be acquired from graduate level course work. This will not negate the mandated three (3) hours of ethics CEU’s required every two (2) years.

Licensed psychologists/licensed school psychologists, who teach a graduate or undergraduate psychology course from a regionally accredited graduate institution, may apply such credits towards their continuing education requirements. This will not negate the mandated three (3) hours of ethics CEU’s required every renewal period. Faculty/psychology instructors are eligible to receive three (3) hours of CE credit for each one (1) credit teaching hour for the initial time the course is taught up to a maximum of six (6) CE hours per renewal cycle.

See back of sheet for additional information.

C. PROFESSIONAL PRESENTATIONS:

Licensed psychologists and School Psychologists may receive up to ten (10) hours CEU per renewal cycle for formal psychological presentations. One (1) credit hour for each presentation hour for the initial time the presentation is made.

D. PUBLICATION IN PEER REVIEWED JOURNALS OR TEXTS:

Licensed psychologists may receive up to six (6) hours CEU’s per renewal cycle for a published peer reviewed article in a recognized psychological publication, book, or chapter of a book.

Publications must be documented by appearing in works by recognized publishers of psychological studies/data.

E. LIMITED CEU’s (Up to 10 CE hours per renewal period):

Grand rounds from a medical institution with a clearly psychological focus.

F. SPECIAL ARRANGEMENTS REQUIRING PRE-APPROVAL AND CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION WILL BE NEEDED FOR:

Interactive television seminars at the graduate level.

Successful completion of relevant non-graduate level college classes not being taken for graduate credit.

Programs which do not meet any of the categories described in these Guidelines.

G. SERVICE ON THE WV BOARD OF EXAMINERS IN PSYCHOLOGY:

Three (3) hours of Ethics CEU’s per year will be credited to members of the WVBEP, the Board’s Ethics Investigator, and the Board’s Executive Director.

ALL LICENSEES MUST OBTAIN AT LEAST 50% OF THEIR CE HOURS FROM APA OR NASP APPROVED PROVIDERS.

PROGRAM PROVIDERS:

SEND COMPLETE INFORMATION ON PRESENTER(S), TOPICS, SCHEDULE, AND CREDIT REQUESTED AT LEAST THREE WEEKS PRIOR TO PROGRAM PRESENTATION. DUE TO THE NEED TO REVIEW PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS AND SUPPORTING MATERIALS, PHONE INQUIRIES ARE NOT SUFFICIENT; REQUESTS MUST BE IN WRITING.

PROGRAMS WHICH ARE NOT CLEARLY PSYCHOLOGICAL IN NATURE AND/OR PRESENTED BY A PSYCHOLOGIST MAY NOT BE APPROVED FOR CONTINUING EDUCATION HOURS.
